Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

This is a tribute to the classics, in music and painting.  My first idea was to paint a night scene of a candlelight, and then I thought how fun it would be, to include a sheet music giving reference to Mozart´s wonderful melody: "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik-A Little Night Music".  When it would get dark at night, I lit the candle and started  observing this scene for 15 to 20 minutes and trying to memorize it the most I could.  I did this almost every night until I was able to finish the painting.  The size of the painting is 14 x 18 in., oil on canvas.

Éste es un tributo a los clásicos, en música y en pintura.  Mi primera idea fue pintar una escena de noche de una luz de candela, y después se me ocurrió que, sería divertido incluir una hoja de partitura haciendo referencia a la maravillosa melodia de Mozart: "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik-Una Pequeña Música de Noche". Cuando oscurecía por la noche, prendía la vela y empezaba a observar esta escena por 15 a 20 minutos, tratando de memorizarla a lo más que pudiera.  Hice ésto casi todas las noches hasta que pude terminar la pintura.  El tamaño de la pintura es 35 x 45 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Egg and oil emulsion self portrait-Autoretrato con emulsión de huevo y óleo

It´s been a while since I haven´t experimented using an egg/oil emulsion medium.  The egg/oil emulsion is a medium that you could mix water and oil, thanks to the emulsifying properties of the egg yolk.  1 part egg yolk, 1 part oil, and 2 parts water is a good recipe.  On this painting I experimented mixing the egg/oil emulsion with turpentine instead of water to dilute the paint.  The egg/oil emulsion is a traditional medium that combines the properties of egg tempera and oil painting.  Some artists grind their pigments with this emulsion and use it for their underpaintings or alla prima works.  On this painting, I used it with tubed paints and used two to three layers of paint, it´s a very flexible medium.  The size of the painting is 12 x 17 in., egg/oil emulsion on canvas.

Ya ha sido un rato que no había experimentado usar un emulsión de huevo y óleo.  La emulsión de huevo y aceite es un medio que se puede mezclar el agua con el óleo, gracias a las propiedades emulsiadoras de la yema de huevo.  1 parte yema de huevo, 1 parte óleo y 2 partes agua es una buena receta.  En esta pintura experimenté mezclar la emulsión de huevo y óleo con trementina en vez de agua para diluir la pintura.  La emulsión de huevo y óleo es un medio tradicional que combina las propiedades del huevo de tempera y la pintura al óleo.   Algunos artistas muelen sus pigmentos secos con esta emulsión y la usan para sus pinturas debajo o trabajos Alla prima.  En esta pintura lo usé con pinturas de tubo y usé dos o tres capas de pintura, es un medio muy flexible.  El tamaño de la pintura es 30 x 43 cms, emulsión de huevo y óleo sobre lienzo.

Dutch Pride-Orgullo Holandes

This painting was very interesting for me to paint.  I was lucky to find these wonderful little objects to paint.  I have two different 10 Gulden in my collection, this one is a 1968 classic one, with a portrait drawing of Frans Hals. The doll reminds me of the domestic scene from Vermeer´s famous painting "The Milkmaid" or "The Young Woman with a Water Pitcher", and that´s the kind of soft lighting effect that I wanted to assimilate in the background. The porcelain clog was my favorite subject that I wanted to paint, I like its Delft Blue handpainted designs, especially the landscape with the windmill.  The size of the painting is 14 x 18 inches, oil on canvas.

Esta pintura fue muy interesante de pintar para mí.  Tuve suerte de encontrar estos pequeños objetos para pintar.  Tengo dos diferente 10 Gulden en mi colección, éste es uno clásico de 1968, con el dibujo del retrato de Frans Hals.  La muñequita me hace acordarme de la escena de la famosa pintura de Vermeer, "La Lechera" o "La joven con un Jarro de Agua", y ese es el tipo de efecto de luz suave que quise asimilar en el fondo.  El zueco de porcelana fue mi tema favorito que quería pintar, me gusta sus diseños pintados  mano con Azul de Delft, especialmente el paisaje con el molino de viento.  El tamaño de la pintura es 35 x 46 pulgadas, oleó sobre lienzo.

Call me! - ¡Llámame!

I´m always interested in painting something nostalgic and be able to tell a story at the same time.  The number is written on the paper with the "call me!" or "¡llámame!" invitation.  The telephone number written in the paper is non-existent, it´s 522-1974 or may 22-1974: my birth date!  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on canvas.

Siempre estoy interesado en pintar algo nostálgico y poder contar una historia al mismo tiempo.  El número está escrito en el papel con la invitación "call me!" o ¡llámame!".  El número de teléfono escrito en el papel es no existente, es el 522-1974 o mayo 22-1974: ¡mi fecha de nacimiento!  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 51 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Good Times-Buenos Tiempos

The nostalgia is back! The LP vinyl record is ready to be played, to remember those nice times of yesterday.  The size of the painting is 18 x 24 inches, oil on canvas.

La nostalgia está de regreso.  El disco LP de vinilo está listo para ser tocado, para acordarse de esos bonitos tiempos del ayer.  El tamaño de la pintura es 46 x 61 centímetros, óleo sobre lienzo.

On this painting I got inspired on a vintage radio cassette player that was kept by my oldest aunt, who is at this moment 90 years old.  My father bought some small radio cassette players like this to give them as gifts to some family members 20 years ago.  The brand on the portable radio cassette player is Realistic, but as I always do in many of my painting I changed the brand name to Rotceh, which is my middle name spelled backwards: Hector.  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.

En esta pintura me inspiró una radio casetera vieja que fue mantenida por mi tía más mayor, quien tiene ahorita 90 años de edad.  Mi papá compró algunas pequeñas radio caseteras como ésta para darlas como regalos a algunos familiares 20 años atrás.  La marca en la radio casetera portatil es Realistic, pero como yo hago en muchas de mis pinturas cambié el nombre de la marca a Rotceh, que es mi nombre de en medio leído al revés: Héctor.  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 51 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Olive Oil and Fruits-Aceite de Oliva y Frutas

On this painting I wanted to recreate a classical style of painting.  I started by doing a raw umber imprimatura  and the drawing.  Once that was dried I wanted to try using a dead color underpainting: I used yellow ochre for the olive oil bottle, raw umber for the label in the bottle, a gray mix of ivory black and cremnitz white on the metal plate, burnt sienna and yellow ochre on the peaches with some gray mixed in the shadow, burnt sienna on the grapes, raw umber and gray for the background, and for the table: burnt sienna and gray.  After this was dried I started to have more fun adding more details and colors to the painting.  On the following layers I ended up using all these colors: raw umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, genuine naples yellow, venetian red, permanent alizarin crimson, genuine malachite green, french ultramarine blue, ivory black and cremnitz white.  The size of this painting is 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.

En esta pintura quise recrear un estilo de pintura clásica.  Empecé haciendo una imprimatura de sombra natural y el dibujo.  Cuando eso secó quise intentar usar una baja pintura de colores muertos: usé amarillo ocre para la botella de aceite de olivo, sombra natural para la etiqueta, una mezcla de gris de negro marfil y blanco cremnitz en el plato de metal, siena tostada y amarillo ocre en los duraznos con gris mezclado en la parte de la sombra, siena tostada para las uvas, sombra natural y gris para el fondo, y para la mesa: siena tostada y gris.  Después que ésto secó empecé a divertime más agregando más detalles y colores a la pintura.  En las capas siguientes terminé usando todos estos colores: sombra natural, siena tostada, amarillo ocre, amarillo nápoles genuino, rojo veneciano, alizarin crimson permanente, verde malaquita genuino, azul ultramar francés, negro marfil y blanco cremnitz(blanco de plomo).  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 51 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.
