On this painting I got inspired on a vintage radio cassette player that was kept by my oldest aunt, who is at this moment 90 years old.  My father bought some small radio cassette players like this to give them as gifts to some family members 20 years ago.  The brand on the portable radio cassette player is Realistic, but as I always do in many of my painting I changed the brand name to Rotceh, which is my middle name spelled backwards: Hector.  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.

En esta pintura me inspiró una radio casetera vieja que fue mantenida por mi tía más mayor, quien tiene ahorita 90 años de edad.  Mi papá compró algunas pequeñas radio caseteras como ésta para darlas como regalos a algunos familiares 20 años atrás.  La marca en la radio casetera portatil es Realistic, pero como yo hago en muchas de mis pinturas cambié el nombre de la marca a Rotceh, que es mi nombre de en medio leído al revés: Héctor.  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 51 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Olive Oil and Fruits-Aceite de Oliva y Frutas

On this painting I wanted to recreate a classical style of painting.  I started by doing a raw umber imprimatura  and the drawing.  Once that was dried I wanted to try using a dead color underpainting: I used yellow ochre for the olive oil bottle, raw umber for the label in the bottle, a gray mix of ivory black and cremnitz white on the metal plate, burnt sienna and yellow ochre on the peaches with some gray mixed in the shadow, burnt sienna on the grapes, raw umber and gray for the background, and for the table: burnt sienna and gray.  After this was dried I started to have more fun adding more details and colors to the painting.  On the following layers I ended up using all these colors: raw umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, genuine naples yellow, venetian red, permanent alizarin crimson, genuine malachite green, french ultramarine blue, ivory black and cremnitz white.  The size of this painting is 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.

En esta pintura quise recrear un estilo de pintura clásica.  Empecé haciendo una imprimatura de sombra natural y el dibujo.  Cuando eso secó quise intentar usar una baja pintura de colores muertos: usé amarillo ocre para la botella de aceite de olivo, sombra natural para la etiqueta, una mezcla de gris de negro marfil y blanco cremnitz en el plato de metal, siena tostada y amarillo ocre en los duraznos con gris mezclado en la parte de la sombra, siena tostada para las uvas, sombra natural y gris para el fondo, y para la mesa: siena tostada y gris.  Después que ésto secó empecé a divertime más agregando más detalles y colores a la pintura.  En las capas siguientes terminé usando todos estos colores: sombra natural, siena tostada, amarillo ocre, amarillo nápoles genuino, rojo veneciano, alizarin crimson permanente, verde malaquita genuino, azul ultramar francés, negro marfil y blanco cremnitz(blanco de plomo).  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 51 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Self portrait #2

As a change of pace I decided to paint another self portrait.  This time I decided to paint myself with a hooded raincoat.  At first I thought it was a fun idea, then I thought it wasn´t such a good idea to paint myself with a hood on at 92 F/34 C degrees.  I had to paint myself in the morning when it´s not so hot, removing the hood from my head occasionally, and trying to paint myself more from memory.  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on canvas.

Como un cambio de rutina decidí pintar otro autoretrato.  Esta vez decidí pintarme con una capucha.  Al principio pensé que era una idea divertida, después pensé que no era tan buena idea pintarme con una capucha puesta haciendo una temperatura de 34 grados celcios/92 grados Fahrenheit.  Tuve que pintarme en la mañana cuando no está tan caliente, quitarme la capucha de mi cabeza ocacionalmente y tratar de pintarme más de la memoria.  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 50 cms., óleo sobre lienzo.

The Little Patriot-El Pequeño Patriota

This little boy was playing that drum with so much energy and enthusiasm. He is a student of a military elementary school and was marching and playing the drums on independence day.  It was a september 15th date, which is El Salvador´s and the other Central American nations of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica´s independence celebration.  All these nations, that would become known for some time as the United Provinces of Central America, gained independence from Spain on september 15th, 1821.  The size of the painting is 23 x 31 in., oil on canvas.

Este niño tocaba ese tambor con tanta energia y entusiasmo.  Es un estudiante de un colegio militar y estaba marchando y tocando el tambor el día de la independencia.  Era un septiembre 15, que es el día de celebración de independencia de El Salvador y las otras naciones centroamericanas de Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, y Costa Rica.  Todas estas naciones, que serían conocidas por un tiempo como las Provincias Unidas de Centro América, ganaron la independencia de España el 15 de septiembre de 1821.  El tamaño de la pintura es 60 x 80 cms., óleo sobre lienzo.

Dedication-Dedicatoria

The dedication is written on the paper, which reads: Gymnopédie #1, Erik Satie, which is one of my favorite classical melodies.   It always relaxes me to listen to melodies like this, I just have to close my eyes and start dreaming.  This classical melody can sound so wonderfully on the little piano music box, or on the recorder.  The music box represents recorded music, and the recorder represents live music.  This is a tribute of mine to the classics, whether be music, literature, sculptures, drawings, paintings, etc.  I hope you enjoy my dedication.  The size of the painting is 12 x 16 in., oil on canvas.

La dedicatioria está escrita en el papel, que lee: Gymnopédie #1, Erik Satie, que es una de mis melodias clásicas favoritas.  Siempre me relaja escuchar melodias como éstas, sólo teno que cerrar mis ojos y empezar a soñar.  Esta melodía clásica puede sonar maravillosamente en la caja de música del pianito, o en la flauta de plástico.  La caja de música representa la música grabada, y la flauta de plástico representa la música en vivo.  Éste es un homenaje mio a los clásicos, ya sea en la música, literatura, esculturas, dibujos, pinturas, etc.  Espero disfruten de mi dedicatoria.  El tamaño de la pintura es 30 x 40 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

The Phantom-El Fantasma

The Phantom has been my favorite comic strip and one of my first inspirations to practice drawing when I was 8 or 9 years old.  Every day I looked forward to reading the Phantom on the newspaper, I loved the stories and the illustrations.  Sometimes I would spend a whole afternoon drawing my own stories based on this legendary character.  The size of the painting is 7 x 8.5 in., oil on canvas.

El Fantasma ha sido mi tira cómica favorita y una de mis primeras inspiraciones para practicar el dibujo cuando tenía 8 o 9 años.  Todos los días esperaba con anticipación leer el Fantasma en el periódico, me encantaban las historias e ilustraciones.  A veces me tomaría toda una tarde dibujando mis propias historias basadas en este legendario personaje.  El tamaño de la pintura es 17 x 21 cms., óleo sobre lienzo
