This is an autobiographical drawing: the photo is of me when I was a little boy.  On the Spanish note it reads: "the boy Jose Hector Alvarenga, winner of first place in drawing, December 13, 1982 ( the date when this photo was taken).  The size of the drawing is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, graphite on paper.

New Year-Nuevo Año

I love to add lots of symbolisms and stories to a painting.  What first got me inspired to paint this painting was the little boy´s  figurine.  Every time I see it, I got reminded of the traditional new year´s illustrations.  An old man, representing old year or father time is leaving the small boy in charge of the new year.  I love how the small boy figurine seems to be barely waking up, a symbolism that the new year has barely started,  bringing so many new hopes, promises and expectations.   The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on canvas.

Me gusta agregar mucho simbolismos e historias a una pintura.  Lo que me inspiró de primero para pintar esta pintura fue la figurita del niñito.  Cada vez que la veo, me acuerdo de las ilustraciones tradicionales del nuevo año.  Un viejito, representado por el año viejo o el padre tiempo, deja al niñito encargado del nuevo año.  Me gusta como la figurita del niñito parece despertarse apenas, un simbolismo de que el nuevo año acaba de comenzar, trayendo tantas nuevas esperanzas, promesas y expectativas.  El tamaño de la pintura es 40 x 50 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Primary Colors-Colores Primarios

The three primary colors are yellow, red and blue.  From these three primary colors we get the secondary colors: yellow and blue: green, yellow and red: orange, red and blue: purple...and the tertiary colors: red orange, yellow orange, yellow green, blue green, etc.  Mixing these three colors will give us different variations of grays.  On this painting yellow is represented by the tube of a yellow oil color, the red is represented by the red brush handle, and the blue, by the design on the small oil medium can. The size of the painting is 14 x 18 in., oil on panel.

Los tres colores primarios son amarillo, rojo y azul.  De estos tres colores primarios obtenemos los colores secudarios: amarillo y azul: verde, amarillo y rojo: anaranjado, rojo y azul: morado..y los colores terciarios: rojo anaranjado, amarillo anaranjado, amarillo verde, azul verde, etc.  Mezclando estos tres colores nos dará diferentes variaciones de grises.  En esta pintura el amarillo es representado por el tubo de óleo de color amarillo, el rojo por el mango rojo del pincel, y el azul, por el diseño en el tarrito de medio de óleo.  El tamaño de la pintura es de 35 x 46 cms, óleo sobre tabla.

Money is King-El Dinero es el Rey

I always liked the spanish cards and played many of its games.  The spanish cards has 40 cards, 4 suits(the gold coins, the clubs, the cups, and the swords)  and 10 numbered cards.  1-7 and 10-12: 10 is the jack or the prince, 11 is the knight or queen, and 12 is the king.  On the card is the king of gold coins and on the coin is king Juan Carlos I, King of Spain(1975-2014).  The size of the drawing is 5.5 x 8.5 in., graphite on paper.

Siempre me han gustado las barajas españolas y he jugado muchos de sus juegos.  La baraja española tiene 40 cartas: cuatro manjares(oros, bastos, copas, y espadas) y diez cartas ennumeradas. 1-7 y 10-12 . el 10 es la sota, el 11 el caballo, y el 12 el rey.  En la carta está el rey de oros y en la moneda está el rey Juan Carlos, Rey de España(1975-2014)  El tamaño del dibujo es de 14 x 21 cms.

Just to have some fun I decided to do a little trompe l´oeil drawing of a 10 dollar bill.  For this drawing I used a 2h, hb, b, a mechanical pencil, and some graphite powder.  The size of the drawing is 5.5 x 8.5 inches, graphite on paper.

Para divertirme decidí hacer un pequeño dibujo de trampantojo de un billete de 10 dólares.  Para este dibujo usé un lápiz 2h, hb, b, un lápiz portaminas, y un poco de polvo de grafito.  El tamaño del dibujo es del dibujo es de 13 x 21, grafito sobre papel.

God Bless This Home-Dios Bendiga Este Hogar

I like the combination of folk art with realist art, and decided that it would be a fun idea to paint this subject. In the inscription it reads in Spanish "Dios Bendiga Este Hogar" or "God Bless This Home".  To make it more universal I decided to exclude the name of the country where they make this kind of crafts, which was Nicaragua.  I could see some similarities from the folk art from my country, El Salvador, but I could also see some differences.  On the landscape on the folk art seems to be an indication of Nicaragua´s Lake, the biggest lake in Central America, and the only lake in the world that has sharks.  The size of the painting is 9 x 12 inches, oil on Arches paper.

Me gusta la combinación de artesanías con arte realista, y decidí que sería una idea divertida de pintar este tema.  En la inscripción se lee el titulo de la obra: "Dios Bendiga Este Hogar".  Para darle un mensaje universal decidí excluir el nombre del país donde se elaboran este tipo de artesanías, que era Nicaragua.  Puedo ver algunas similitudes a las artesanías de mi país, El Salvador, pero puedo ver algunas diferencias.  En el paisaje de la artesanía parece verse una indicación de el "Lago de Nicaragua", el lago más grande de Centroamérica y el único en el mundo que tiene tiburones.  El tamaño de la pintura es de 23 x 31 cms, óleo sobre papel Arches.

This is one of the most beautiful banknotes that I have in my collection.  The portrait in the bill is of Annette Von Droste-Huelsholff(1797-1848), a famous German writer and poet.  The German Mark(Deutsche Mark) was the national currency of West Germany from 1948 to 1990 and of Germany from 1990 to 2002, when it was replaced by the Euro.  The size of this painting is 6 x 8 in., oil on canvas.

Éste es uno de los billetes más bonitos que tengo en mi colección.  El retrato en el billete is de Annette Von Droste-Huelshoff(1797-1848), una famosa escritora y poetisa alemana.  El Marco Alemán(Deutsche Mark) fue la moneda nacional de Alemania Occidental de 1948 a 1990 y de Alemania de 1990 al 2002, cuando fue remplazada por el Euro.  El tamaño de la pintura es de 15 x 20 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Balance

Finally I decided that it was about time that I paint my parrot holding itself on a rope.  All the times it does this, it would start holding itself upside down screaming and flapping its wings.   I had to use my memory a lot, as there´s no way a parrot would pose holding itself on a rope. The size of this painting is 9 x 12 inches, oil on Arches Paper.

Finalmente decidí que era tiempo que pintara a mi lorita sosteniéndose en una cuerda. Todo el tiempo que hace ésto, empezará a sostenerse cabeza abajo gritando y aleteando sus alas.  Tuve que usar mi memoria bastante, porque no hay forma que un loro va a posar sosteniéndose en una cuerda.  El tamaño de la pintura es 22 x 30, óleo sobre papel Arches.
