Geisha´s Elegance-Elegancia Geisha

This painting is based on a 4 hours alla prima painting session  from life that I painted 3 months ago.  This was a great exercise, but wanted to do something way more detailed.  There´s so much elegancy on the pose, the cloths, the kimono, the fan she´s holding, the table, and of course this beautiful oriental lady.  The size of the painting is 18 x 24 in., oil on canvas.

Esta pintura está basada en una sesion de pintura de 4 horas de alla prima al natural que pinté 3 meses antes.  Este fue un buen ejercicio, pero quería hacer algo mucho más detallado.  Hay tanta elegancia en la pose, la ropa, el kimono, el abanico que está sosteniendo, la mesa, y desde luego esta hermosa dama oriental.  El tamaño de la pintura es 46 x 61 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Hindi

This the first time that I experimented using Arches paper for oils as a support.   The paper is a wonderful surface to work on, and doesn´t need any further preparation.  I also experimented using two new historical colors I recently bought: lapiz lazuli and malachite.  Lapis lazuli was one of the most expensive and rarest pigments the Old Masters used.   Lapis Lazuli is a blue colored semi precious stone that was replaced by French Ultramarine blue in the 19th century.  Malachite green is copper carbonate.  I used lapiz lazuli as a glaze on the background and malachite green on the the rupee bill.  The size of the painting is 9 x 12 in.  oil on Arches Paper.

Ésta es la primera vez que experimenté usar el papel Arches para óleo como soporte.  El papel es una superficie maravillosa para pintar, y no necesita ninguna preparación extra.  También experimenté usar dos nuevos colores históricos que compre recientemente: lapislázuli y malaquita.  El lapislázuli fue uno de los pigmentos más caros y raros que los viejos maestros usaron.  Lapislázuli es una piedra semi preciosa de color azul que fue remplazada por el azul ultramar francés en el siglo 19.  El verde malaquita es carbonato de cobre.  Usé lapislázuli como una veladura en el fondo y verde malaquita en el billete de rupee.  El tamaño de la pintura es 23 x 31 cms, óleo sobre papel Arches.

Nuts and Chocolate-Nueces y Chocolate

I always enjoy drinking a cup of warm chocolate just like the grandmother´s illustration on the box of chocolate tablets. I already had the idea of painting the nut and the small pot before it ocurred to me to add the "Abuelita" box of chocolate tablets.  I enjoy painting "paintings within paintings" subject matters...as it feels that you have two or three paintings going at once in the same painting.  The size of the painting is 11 x 14 in., oil on oil primed linen canvas.

Siempre disfruto tomar de una taza de chocolate caliente como la ilustración de la abuelita en la caja de tabletas de chocolate.  Ya tenía la idea de pintar la nuez y la pequeña olla antes que se me ocurriera pintar la caja de tabletas de chocolate de "Abuelita".  Me divierte pintar temas de "pinturas sobre pinturas, ya que se siente como que se tuvieran dos o tres pinturas que pintar al mismo tiempo en la misma pintura.  El tamaño de la pintura es 27 x 35 cms., óleo sobre lienzo de lino con imprimación de óleo.

Breakfast 2-Desayuno 2

It´s been a while since I have experimented using an oil primed linen as a suport.  I still have to get used to using them, as I´m more used to painting on acrylic primed cotton canvases.  My palette for this painting was very limited: raw umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, indian yellow, ultramarine blue, and foundation white(lead white with a little bit of zinc white).  The size of this painting is 9.5 x 13 in., oil on linen.

Ha sido un rato que empecé a experimentar usar un lienzo de lino con imprimación de óleo como superficie. Todavía tengo que acostumbrarme a usarlos, estoy más acostumbrado a pintar en lienzos de algodón con imprimación acrílica.  Mi paleta para esta pintura fue muy limitada: tierra de sombra natural, tierra de siena tostada, amarillo ocre, amarillo indio, azul ultramar, and blanco fundación(blanco de plomo con un poquito de blanco de zinc).  El tamaño de la pintura es 24 x 33 cms., óleo sobre lino.

Sailing-Navegando

I recently went to the beach and decided to do some quick oil sketches for this work.  It was very interesting for me to paint plein aire..it´s nice to be albe to take the time to study the depth,  variety of colors and movement of the sea.  There´s so much to learn and see. The size of the painting is 12 x 16, oil on canvas.

Recientemente fuí a la playa y decidí hacer algunos bocetos al óleo para este trabajo.  Fue muy interesante para mi pintar al pleno aire..es agradable el poder tomarse el tiempo para estudiar la profundidad , variedad de colores y estudiar el movimiento del mar.  Hay tanto que ver y aprender.  El tamaño de la pintura es 30 x 40 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Dusk-Atardecer

I always wanted to paint a homemade oil lamp, because it reminds me of my childhood.  I grew up in my hometown until I was 6 and a half years old.  Until that time there was no electricity in town, all we had as light was the moonlight or this kind of homemade oil lamps.  Back then when I was living in my hometown, I was always barefoot as other kids of my age, I never got to wear shoes or sandals until I was 7 years old.   I lived a memorable and happy childhood in my town, despite all this limitations.  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on canvas.

Siempre había querido pintar un candil artesanal, porque me hace acordarme de mi niñez.  Crecí en mi pueblo hasta los 6 años y medio de edad.  En ese tiempo, no había electricidad en el pueblo, todo lo que teníamos era la luz de la luna o este tipo de candiles artesanales.  En ese tiempo cuando estaba viviendo en mi pueblo, siempre andaba descalzo como otros niños de mi edad, nunca usé zapatos o sandalias hasta que tenía 7 años.  Viví una niñez memorable y feliz en mi pueblo, a pesar de todas estas limitaciones.  El tamaño de la pintura es 41 x 50 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

It´s Better Natural-Es Mejor Natural

To be able to enjoy a healthy lifestyle...nothing is better natural.  Artificial drinks are high in sugar and empty calories.  Water is the best diet drink there is, it has 0 calories.  The comparisons can go on and on and come to the same conclusion: it´s better natural.  The size of the painting is 10 x 14 in., oil on canvas.

Para disfrutar de un estilo de vida saludable..nada es mejor que lo natural.   Las bebidas artificiales son altas en azucar y calorias vacias.  El agua es la mejor bebida dietética que puede haber..contiene 0 calorías.  Las comparaciones pueden seguir y llegar a la misma conclusión: es mejor natural.  El tamaño de la pintura es 25 x 35 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Date in the Calendar-Fecha en el Calendario

This is the most autobiographical painting I have ever done.  The date in the calendar is Wednesday, May 22nd, 1974: my birthdate.  1974 was the year of the tiger in the Chinese calendar.  I was born in a small rural town north of El Salvador bordering Honduras, represented by the oxes and cart´s picture.  The name of the town is written bellow the image: San José Ojos de Agua, Chalatenango, El Salvador.

Ésta es la pintura más autobiográfica que haya hecho.  La Fecha en el calendario es miércoles 22 de mayo de 1974: mi fecha de nacimiento. 1974 fue el año del tigre en el calendario chino.  Yo nací en un pequeño pueblo rural norte de El Salvador frontera con Honduras, representado por la imagen de los bueyes y la carreta.  El nombre del pueblo está escrito abajo de la imagen: San José Ojos de Agua, Chalatenango, El Salvador.

Devotion 2-Devoción 2

Devotion is part of all faiths and religions.  The rosary laying on the table and the madonna and child image represents the devotional act of praying, the bible represents all religions not only the Catholic or Christian religion.  The size of this painting is 18 x 24 in., oil on canvas

La devoción es parte de todas las fes y religiones.  El rosario en la mesa y la imagen de la virgen y el niño representan el acto devocional del rezo, la biblia representa todas las religiones no solamente la religión Católica o Cristiana.  El tamaño de la pintura es 46 x 61 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

I love to do paintings like this.  There´s so many stories to tell and so many details to paint.   On the small torn paper I tried to write something in French.  It reads: C´est real?  Is it real?  Peut etre un illusion, maybe an illusion.  L´artiste a un..the artist has a...part of the trick is to write incomplete sentences to add some mystery.  The size of the painting is 18 x 24 in., oil on canvas.

Knowledge-Sabiduría

This work took me around 7 hours to finish it.  The 7 hours were divided in 3 days, the first two sessions were of 3 hours and the last one was around an hour. The first day I blocked in the whole composition.  The second day was more of adding some more details and giving more depth to the colors.  The third day, everything was finished but decided to make some small extra changes to improve the painting.  The size of the painting is 14 x 15 in., oil on canvas.

Este trabajo me llevó alrededor de 7 horas para terminarlo.  Las 7 horas fueron divididas en 3 días, las primeras dos sesiones fueron de tres horas y la última fue de una hora.  El primer día pinté toda la composición.  El segundo día era de agregar más detalle y darle más profundidad a los colores.  El tercer día, todo estaba terminado, pero decidí hacer unos pequeños cambios para mejorar la pintura.  el tamaño de la pintura es 36 x 38 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

Travelling is one of the most rewarding experiences there can be.  Every place in the world has its own unique beauty.  It´s an unmemorable experience to visit different countries, get to hear different languages, experience different cultures, taste different foods, see different landscapes and cityscapes, and smell different aromas.   The size of this painting is 20 x 24 in., oil on canvas.

Viajar es una de las experiencias más gratificante que pueden haber.  Cada lugar en el mundo tiene su propia belleza única.  Es una experiencia inmemorable visitar diferentes paises, oir diferentes idiomas, experenciar diferentes culturas, probar diferentes comidas, ver diferentes paisajes y ciudades, y oler diferentes aromas.

I like to paint narrative paintings as this.  There´s so much to tell in each detail or texture painted.  The girl is riding her homemade scooter, almost dragging it on the edge of the sidewalk.  Even though she´s poor, she´s satisfied with the little she has.  She´s having fun riding her scooter without any worries or hurries.  The size of this painting is 31.5 x 33 in., oil on canvas.

Me gusta pintar pinturas narrativas como ésta.  Hay mucho que decir en cada detalle o textura pintada.  La chica está andando en su patineta casera, casi arrastrándola en el bordo de la acera.  Aunque ella es pobre, está satisfecha con lo poco que tiene.  Se está divertiendo andando en su patineta sin preocupaciones o apuros.  El tamaño de esta pintura es 80 x 84 cms, óleo sobre lienzo.

This was my first time that I experimented using slate as a support.  The slate I used for this painting was a little heavy and had some textures, but it was a wonderful support for painting.  Slate was used as a support by Titian, Sabastiano del Piombo, Alessandro Allori, Rubens and other great masters. The size of the painting is 11.75 x 23.5 in., oil on slate.

Ésta es mi primera vez que experimenté usar una superficie como la pizarra.  La pizarra que usé para esta pintura es un poco pesada y tiene algunas texturas, pero fue una superficie maravillosa para pintar.  La pizarra fue usada como soporte por Tiziano, Sebastiano del Piombo, Alessandro Allori, Rubens y otros grandes maestros.  El tamaño de la pintura es 30 x 60 cms, óleo sobre pizarra.

Breakfast, Desayuno

On this painting I wanted to paint a tea kettle, a semita(sweet bread), and some cup of a hot drink. This is a typical Salvadoran breakfast: the sweet bread known as semita is made with a filling of pineaple, guava, brown sugar or even fig.  The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on panel.

En esta pintura quise pintar una tetera, una semita(pan dulce, y una taza de bebida caliente.  Éste es un típico desayuno salvadoreño: el pan dulce conocido como semita está hecho con un relleno de piña, guayaba, dulce de panela, o hasta figo.  El tamaño de la pintura es 41 x 51, óleo sobre tabla.

I like how a painting can tell a story in its details.  Like a jigsaw puzzle, you´re trying to discover what else is there and what more can the painting tell you.  If you look at the black vase, you will find a reflection of myself painting.  I could have added something else, but I wanted to tell the story that I was there painting that theme.  The size of the painting is 18 x 24 in., oil on canvas.

This painting gives a tribute to the past.  The statue of the boy seems like a ghost that has suddenly appeared, reminding us of that far away past.  On the picture there´s an illustration of a lady doing her every day activities, making us imagine how life used to be more than a century ago.   The size of the painting is 16 x 20 in., oil on canvas.

Old Man With a Hat, Viejito Con Sombrero

This is the first painting that I finished this year.  This was my second time that I had the chance to work with copper.  Before painting, I prepared the surface using a coat of lead white and calcium carbonate mix, and let it dry for two months. It was an interesting experience for me working with this support; I wish I could afford to do it again and again, but copper is very expensive.  The size of the painting is 6 x 8 in, oil on copper.

Ésta es la primera pintura que logro terminar este año.  Ésta fue mi segunda vez que tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con el cobre.  Antes de pintar, preparé la superficie con una capa de una mezcla de blanco plomo y carbonato de calcio, y lo dejé secar por dos meses.  Fue una experiencia interesante para mi trabajar con esta superficie; desearía hacerlo una y otra vez, pero el cobre es bien caro.  El tamaño de la pintura es 15 x 20 cms, óleo sobre cobre.
